How to send a photo from your iPhone directly to Facebook

Wish you could post a fresh snapshot from your iPhone onto your Facebook wall without having to open the Facebook app? Well, there is a way, even though there’s no “Send to Facebook” button in the iPhone’s Camera application (or at least, not yet).
Here’s the trick: using a personalized email address for uploading photos to Facebook. Just attach the photo you’d like to post to the email, add your custom Facebook email address, and use the subject line for adding a message to go with the photo (like “Cool photo!”).
Update [7/18/12]: Facebook has (surprise, surprise!) changed the way to get your “post-by-e-mail” address. Click here for more details and step-by-step instructions.
Let’s get started!
  • Log into your Facebook account, then visit the Facebook Mobile page.
  • Look for the section labeled “Upload via Email”; there, you should find your custom email address for uploading snapshots to your Facebook wall. If the address looks like gibberish (like “abc123xyz@m.facebook.com), don’t worry—that’s how it’s supposed to look.
  • Create a contact on your phone for your “upload by email” address. I went ahead and labeled mine “Facebook photo.”
  • Now, let’s test it. Tap Camera on your iPhone, take a picture, tap the Share button (the one with the little curved arrow), then tap “Email Photo.”
  • In the “To:” line, tap in the name of the contact you just created (“Facebook photo,” in my case), tap a message in the Subject line, and press “Send.”
  • Whoosh! Your photo will be automatically posted to your Facebook wall, using the default Facebook privacy settings (which you can always change by clicking the arrow in the top-right corner of any Facebook page, then select Privacy Settings).
A word of caution: Don’t share your personalized Facebook Mobile email address with anyone—that is, unless you’re fine with strangers posting random pictures to your Facebook wall.
If you’re afraid your Facebook Mobile address is out in the open, you can always reset it from the Facebook Mobile site. Just click “Find out more” under “Upload via Email,” then click the “refresh your upload email” link.

How to completely hide the Facebook ticker

How to hide the Facebook ticker How to completely hide the Facebook ticker (finally!)Some people love it, most seem to hate it. Until now, though, there was no real way to completely hide the Facebook ticker—you know, that scrolling feed of real-time alerts that ticks off each and every activity of your Facebook friends, no matter how minuscule they may be.
Sure, you could always try closing the Facebook chat sidebar, where the ticker lives if you’re lucky enough to have a large enough display. Another option was to keep the sidebar open and pull the divider between the ticker and your Facebook chat buddies all the way up.
Those with smaller displays (and thus, smaller browser windows), however, were stuck with the ticker in a column right next to the Facebook news feed—and until now, there was no way to make it completely disappear.

You can always make the ticker come back, if you really miss it.
Well, good news. As Inside Facebook reports, it is now possible to hide the Facebook ticker permanently, even if you view Facebook in a small browser window.
Here’s how you do it.
  • First, if you have the Facebook chat sidebar open (the one that includes your Facebook friends who are available for chat), go ahead and close it. When you do, the ticker will pop into a column to the right of your news feed.
  • Next, look for the little arrow at the top of the ticker; hover your mouse over the arrow, and a little pop-up reading “Hide Sidebar” will appear.
  • Go ahead and click the arrow. Presto! The ticker will disappear—and it should stay disappeared, even when you return to Facebook in the future.
  • Want the sidebar back? Just click the arrow again.
Note: As Inside Facebook points out, not everyone on Facebook may have the “Hide Sidebar” button showing up on their accounts yet; if that’s the case for you, be patient—it’ll likely show up sooner or later.

How to keep Facebook’s new “Open Graph” apps from over-sharing your activity

Facebooks Open Graph apps How to keep Facebooks new Open Graph apps from over sharing your activityYou know those updates in your Facebook news feed about which Washington Post stories your friends are reading, what songs they’re listening to on Spotify, and the shows they’re streaming on Hulu? Well, they’re courtesy of Facebook’s new “Open Graph” apps—and many more are on the way.
These Open Graph applications (which, include apps from the likes of Hulu, Spotify, The Washington Post, Yahoo! News, Urbanspoon, and more) can “seamlessly” share you most recent app activity with your Facebook friends after a single click of the “Add to Facebook” button.
Of course, if you’re eager to show the world that you’re, say, reading up on the Kardashians on Yahoo! News, they hey—go for it.
But if you’d rather keep your reading, listening, and streaming habits to yourself, here’s how to stop Facebook’s new, oversharing Open Graph apps from spilling the beans.

You can limit who sees the posts from "Open Graph" Facebook apps right before you install the app onto your account.
Muzzle an Open Graph app before it’s installed
The first (and luckily, not only) chance you have to keep an Open Graph app from sharing all your activity on Facebook comes as you’re installing the app itself.
During the installation process, you’ll see a pull-down menu that lets you choose how far and wide you’d like your app activity to be spread—from “Public” (meaning everyone and anyone, even non-Facebook members) to “Only Me.”
Select “Only Me” to keep an Open Graph app from sharing any activity at all, or pick a Friend List like “Family” or “Close Friends” to keep your activity in a tighter circle. You can even choose to share with only a few specific friends by selecting “Custom.”
Once you’re satisfied, go ahead and click the “Add to Facebook” button.

You can always go back a change the sharing options for an Open Graph app—or just delete the app completely, if you wish.
Tweak Open Graph app sharing settings in your Privacy Settings
Did you already grant an Open Graph app permission to share your activity with the Facebook masses, or are you simply not sure who can see what? Never fear—there’s an easy way to change the sharing settings for an Open Graph app, even after you’ve installed it.
  • Go to the top-right corner of any Facebook page, click on the little downward arrow (it’s right next to the “Home” link), select Account Settings, then click the Apps link in the left column.
  • Now, see an app in the list that’s been posting a little too much activity to your Facebook Timeline? Click its “Edit” button along the right side of the page.
  • Find the section labeled “App activity privacy,” then check the pull-down menu to the right. Don’t like what you see? Then click it and section a new option—again, anything from “Public” to “Only Me.”
  • From here, you can also revoke the app’s permission to post anything to your Timeline at all (click the “X” next to “Add app activity to your Timeline” and/or “Post to Facebook as you”), or you can zap the app completely by clicking the “Remove app” link.
  • All done? Click “Close.”
So, are you comfortable with “Open Graph” apps sharing what you’re reading, listening to, and watching on Facebook?

How to make your Facebook news feed default to “most recent” stories first

Facebook most recent URL How to make your Facebook news feed default to most recent stories firstHad it up to here with the “highlighted” stories at the top of your Facebook news feed? Well, you can always sort your feed by “most recent” rather than “highlighted,” but there’s just one problem: the next time you return to Facebook, you’ll probably be stuck looking at “highlighted” stories again.
First, the bad news: there’s no official way to permanently switch your news feed stories to chronological order. The good news? You can add a Facebook bookmark to your browser that’ll make your feed default to the “most recent” sorting option.
You can click this link right here to open a new browser window with the custom Facebook link, or you can copy and paste the link below:
http://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr
That little bit of extra code at the end of the link tells Facebook to sort your news feed in chronological (or “chr”) order. A second URL, “https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_nor,” sorts your feed by “highlighted” stories (or posts that Facebook thinks are most relevant to you), and I’m guessing that the “nor” in that link stands for “normal.”
Now, here’s the thing about bookmarking this tweaked Facebook URL: while it’ll definitely force your news feed to default to “most recent” on your initial visit, your feed may revert to sorting by “highlighted” stories as you continue to browse.
Yep, pretty annoying, but at least you can snap back to chronological sorting by clicking your new bookmark again.

  5. How to "Friend" Someone on Facebook & Hide It From Your Status Updates

I’m sure that this has happened to you before. Someone you have ties to, whether it’s a co-worker, your boss, or even worse, a parent, has finally discovered social networking and wants to be your newest Facebook friend.
For me personally, that’s no big deal. I’m fairly open about my online activities. Everything I write, Digg, or otherwise share goes through my FriendFeed to my Twitter then ultimately onto my Facebook (my, that sounds naughty). Besides that, just about everyone I’d consider a co-worker is already on Facebook, and would have little issue about my other Internet activities.
Putting all that aside however, imagine for a moment that I worked at Domino’s Pizza and that I don’t want my boss to know that I just became a fan of Papa John’s (writing this one’s gonna make me hungry). Here’s what I would do to hide Facebook status updates and keep that fact confined to my closer friends:
On your Facebook home page, you should see the ‘Settings’ menu close to the search field on your upper-right. Open that menu and go to ‘Privacy Settings’.
    facebook privacy settings friends
On the next page, you’ll have four choices: Profile, Search, News Feed, and Applications. What you’ll want to edit here are your Profile privacy settings.
By default, everything on your profile is limited to your Friends and your Networks (your first Network is likely your city of residence, but you may have joined more). From the screenshot above, you can see that I’ve limited everything on my profile to my Friends and their Friends. Anyone else who visits my profile will only see that I have a profile, but will not see what’s on it.
In my example, you’re going to want to edit the setting on your Status Updates, since you don’t want your boss to know that you’ve “fanned” the competition. Click that dropdown menu and then select ‘Customize’.
You may want to tweak your overall privacy setting here, but what we’re aiming for is the “Except These People” list at the bottom of this dialog. Type out the name of any of your Friends to restrict that person from viewing anything in your Status Updates.
For all you faithful Facebook fans, we’ve got a lot of tips and tricks on how to make the most of the site. If you have any privacy tips or concerns to share, please drop them in a comment. I’m off to order pizza.
